Stance
is established for freestyle riders by angling the front foot degrees
(always in + angle) and the rear foot degrees (always in –
angle). The stance width is determined by measuring from the middle of
the front base plate in you bindings to the middle of the rear base
plate.
For
example: A rider who is 5’11’’ would have
a fairly
wide stance if the tape measures 22” between the center of
the
base plates. Note: A wider stance is great for adding control and also
creates a better look for style points.
Start
by finding a stance that is minimum shoulder width apart and has slight
angles on the front and back foot as described above. The base plates
of your bindings will tell you how many degrees you bindings are setup
at.
Boots:
Boots
are the most key piece of equipment you can buy, better to go cheap on
your board and bindings then your boots. The boots are your first point
of contact between you, your board and binding’s setup, and
the
snow. It’s very important to have a close relationship with
your
boots so choose wisely.
Toes
should almost touch the liner and your heal should not lift more than
the thickness of a playing card.
Buy
boots that are gender oriented. Girls and boys boots are made much
differently. When you go shopping for boots you will notice there are
several different types of stiffness in the boots for both forward lean
and side lean. More detail is covered inside “Ultimate
Freestyle Snowboarding Tips Revealed”
Backside
Spins:
Spinning
backside means that your back turns to the fall line (downhill) and
your eyes temporarily loose focus on what is in front of your direction
of travel during the first part of the spin.
Backside
spins are a sweet trick because they look hella sick and people know
that you’re going to land blind (facing away from the fall
line)
if you spin 180◦ or 540◦ degrees.
To
start spinning backside, remember that your rotation will begin from
the top of your body down to your feet. When you look in the direction
you want to go your board will usually follow, but that really depends
on how much experience you have.
Turn
your chin towards the top of the hill, then turn your shoulders, and
move your torso (stomach and core) in sync with your hips and knees as
you ollie. As you lift and turn your body in a fluid motion, your board
will follow.
Use
your arms to create momentum and balance your weight as you spin. Look
for the FULL 180◦ turn as you can see what is on the other side of the
hill when you’ve finished the rotation.
Note:
A large part of your momentum will come from your ollie and how well
you pop out of your bent knee position in the ollie.
Frontside
Spins:
Spinning
frontside means that your chest turns towards the fall line and since
you have an open stance you to see what is in front of your direction
of travel.
Frontside
spins may be considered to be a little more difficult among the
majority of snowboarders, but each rider is different and may tell you
they find frontside spins easier. Whatever, just go work your magic!
Many
of the same aspects of your ollie and momentum as mentioned above will
determine your success in the rotation.
When
you start to spin, turn your shoulders in the direction of the
frontside spin and follow the same method until you’re fully
facing the other direction. With frontside spins, you can use your arms
to gain some solid momentum, and then follow your body around with your
torso, and pick them feet up!
Frontside
spins are a little less unnerving than backside spins, but can feel
rather awkward the first couple of times. Soon enough you will have no
problems.
Note:
Use the tail of your board to spring off of when on the hill to help
gain extra momentum.
